Overcoming Perfectionism

If you have navigated to this page, you probably live with the feeling that no matter how hard you work hard, there is a quiet voice who tells you your efforts aren’t enough. You aren’t enough.

Maybe you have carried that voice into your faith, too. You believe in grace, but you live as if God keeps a scorecard. You rest only after everything is done, which means you rarely rest. And the people closest to you sometimes get the tired, distracted, or critical version of you.

This guide is for you. It is not about lowering your standards. It is about pursuing excellence from a place of security instead of fear, receiving the love God has already given you, extending that same grace to others, and being fully present with the people you love.

Perfectionism is common. Research shows it responds well to practical, consistent change. Scripture shows something even better: you don’t have to live with perfectionism forever.

What this guide will help you grow in

•       Excellence: high standards held with open hands, not a clenched fist

•       Self-acceptance: relating to your mistakes with honesty and kindness

•       Receiving God’s love: knowing you are beloved before you perform

•       Grace for others: responding to other people’s mistakes the way God responds to yours

•       Presence: being emotionally available to your spouse, family, and friends

How to use it

1.     Take one week per module. Read the teaching on day one. Then spend about 15 minutes a day on the Scripture, the reflection questions, and the practice.

2.    Write your answers. Print the guide or keep a journal beside it. Writing slows the mind down and makes patterns visible.

3.    Go at your own pace. If a week stirs something up, stay there longer. There is no grade here. (Yes, that is part of the exercise.)

4.    Invite a companion. A spouse, friend, or small group can walk through it with you. Perfectionism loosens its grip when it is brought into the light.

5.    Retake the self-check at the end and compare your answers.
